INVESTING in the latest technology to improve sales is often wasted because businesses do not change their working practices, say academics at Cranfield School of Management.

Writing for the MIT Sloan Management Review, Dr Stan Maklan, Professor Simon Knox and Professor Joe Peppard reveal why investing in Customer Relationship Management is not always a silver bullet for addressing marketing challenges and recommend what needs to be done to achieve the best results.

Their research reveals that, in a bid to increase revenues, there has been a trend for companies to invest in sophisticated new relationship management resources such as call centres, databases, software and websites but then to continue running their business as they always have done.

A BETTER understanding of animal survival instincts could improve a company’s chances of business survival, according to a new study by Cranfield School of Management.

The research explores what business leaders preparing for hard times can learn from solutions that have evolved in the animal kingdom over billions of years.

It has identified four survival strategies that businesses can develop to survive and thrive in difficult economic times.

Report co-author Dr Tazeeb Rajwani, lecturer in strategic management at Cranfield, said: “Animals thrive in environments that are much more deadly than the marketplaces that businesses operate in, so are ideal subjects to learn from.

It has spoken out as its latest research figures show that business confidence has fallen dramatically.

The FSB is calling on ministers to follow the lead of other EU countries and cut VAT in the construction and tourism sectors to 5% for a year to give the economy a real boost.

Consumer demand is a large barrier to economic growth, so a VAT cut would encourage people to spend in these areas, it says.

Milton Keynes is bucking the national trend, according to the latest numbers for those claiming Job Seekers Allowance.

The figure has dropped slightly from 4% of the workforce in May to 3.9% for June. However, the economy remains fragile, with JSA claimants nationally rising by 24,500 – the largest monthly increase for two years.

Samantha Barker, development manager for the Federation of Small Businesses in the Thames Valley, said: “Given the national increase in the JSA figures, the fact that the rate has dropped in Milton Keynes is a step in the right direction.

THE ANNUAL auction of Aston Martin cars and memorabilia staged by Bonhams at the Aston Works Service, Newport Pagnell, raised around £6 million.

Only one of the 245 lots offered remained unsold after the sale on Saturday, which drew some 2,000 people to the Works Service in Tickford Street.

The top selling car of the day was lot 333 (pictured), a beautifully restored 1963 DB4 Series V Vantage Convertible that sold for a predicted £507,500.

With only 60,000 miles on the odometer, the similar example barn-find 1963 Aston Martin DB4 Convertible was also keenly fought over before it finally sold for an outstanding £309,500 against a pre-sale estimate of £80,000-140,000.

Only 6% admitted to knowing when their workmates birthdays are: 17% could name their colleagues spouses, with 11% able to name all of their colleagues' children.

BUSINESSES, not Budgets, will lead the economic recovery by creating new jobs and wealth and the taxes needed to pay for the government’s plans.

That is the message from local chartered accountant Jonathan Vowles in an early reaction to the Budget statement on Wednesday.

Despite the government’s efforts to reduce the public spending deficit, public finances remain in the red and tax rises and spending cuts already announced are set to take effect.

Mr Vowles (pictured), whose firm is based in Cranfield, said: “There are some very welcome headline announcements in this Budget but the devil is always in the detail and things are rarely as rosy as Chancellors paint them in their speeches.

FOR growing, cash-hungry businesses there was a lot of good news in yesterday’s Budget, say Milton Keynes accountants and business advisers Baker Tilly.

This is headed by the reduction of 2% in corporation tax to 26%, with further cuts to come that will give the UK the lowest corporation tax rate of the G7 nations and provide a major incentive to overseas investment.

ECONOMIC stability to give small businesses the confidence to grow should be the main message when Chancellor of the Exchequer George Osborne delivers his Budget tomorrow (Wednesday), according to the Federation of Small Businesses.

Launching its Growth Manifesto at a speed briefing in Westminster, the FSB told MP’s that decisive action was needed to improve the growth prospects of small firms to avoid a jobless recovery.

The UK’s five million small businesses are best placed to grow the economy and pick up the slack that will be left as the public sector cuts take their full effect, but they need to have a stable economic background in which to do this.

I AM aware that my column in Business MK has recently been a lot to do with trees, and saving them, and not a lot about business, the raison d’être of this organ. Not only that, but I understand that several people who really ought to know me better have started calling me a tree-hugger.So, in an effort to get back on track and stop those ugly tree-hugging rumours, I’m turning my attention to issues facing businesses in Milton Keynes and its surrounding areas.

Theo Chalmers celebrates the first success of the Urban Eden campaign.
URBAN Eden - the movement I started almost accidentally to promote a sustainable extension of the original masterplan for Milton Keynes - has had its first success. We appear to have forced Milton Keynes Partnership to admit that it does not know what the situation is with the trees in the city centre. While accepting that "trees will require removal", MKP proudly trumpets that it has "recognised for some time that a robust programme of tree conservation and maintenance is required".

NEW development planned for the city centre may mean the loss of existing trees but the long-term aim is to increase their number throughout Milton Keynes.
Planting and landscaping are required to feature in plans for all new developments, said a Milton Keynes Partnership spokesman. However, removal of trees was not unprecedented. Some had been removed to accommodate Xscape in the late 1990s.In a statement, MKP defended its appointment of natural resource consultancy RPS to carry out a full audit of trees in the city centre.

Milton Keynes Council leader Isobel McCall (pictured) gives her response to criticisms by the Urban Eden group of the expansion plans for the city
AS LEADER of Milton Keynes Council and a member of the Central Milton Keynes Board responsible for delivering the next phase of development of Central Milton Keynes, I welcome the current debate about developments in our city centre. It is disappointing, however, that the debate up to now has been based around fiction and not fact. The original plans for Central Milton Keynes may have been excellent when they were drawn up 40 years ago but life moves on and those who are leading the city forwards in 2007 are faced with an entirely different context to work in.

Theo Chalmers reflects on the first meeting of Urban eden, the group set up to promote a sustainable extension of the original master plan for Milton Keynes.
Urban Eden has had its first meeting, attended by a far better-than-expected cross-section of concerned citizens, including many who’ve been involved in its development and foundation. One of our tasks was to determine what our priorities would be. After discussion, it was agreed that we need to concentrate on the following to make sure that we don’t sleepwalk through the planned rape of Milton Keynes by powerful vested interests determined to suck our beautiful city dry.

Support has been flooding in for Theo Chalmers' campaign to save the 'Urban Eden' that is Milton Keynes.
I HAVE been fairly absorbed of late with the way in which the original dream of Milton Keynes has been scrapped and how this is the last chance to save our Urban Eden. It seems many of you agree. I’ve had e-mails of support and offers of help for Urban Eden. Here’s some examples but I’ve not been able to contact everyone to ask permission to use their quotes, so I’ll mostly use first names only.

Theo Chalmers reports on local reaction to his comments on the changes – not for the better, in his view – planned for Milton Keynes.
OH MY GOD, what have I done? Last month I wrote, more out of sadness than anger, how Milton Keynes, a city designed from scratch to be an urban Eden and admired world-wide was being deliberately ruined in the name of profit and misguided social engineering by central and, to some lesser extent, local government. It seems I’m not alone. From the letters, e-mails and countless conversations I’ve had, it seems that the groundswell of opinion is growing.

Theo Chalmers argues that the plans for Milton Keynes will mean that the character of today’s city could be lost forever.
JUST over 40 years ago, secret plans were being laid to build a new city in the fields of North Bucks. A plan so bold that, upon delivery, it would subsume three towns, several villages and thousands of fertile acres in the valleys of the River Great Ouse and its tributary the Ouzel. One of the key reasons that this particular site was chosen was transport. The new city would be on the M1.
