UK BUSINESS leaders would overwhelmingly prefer an increase in VAT to any other tax rise, should tax increases be announced in next week’s emergency Budget.

A total 61% of the 202 executives polled by Opinion Leader Research on behalf of business advisers KPMG said that on the assumption that tax rises would be necessary in the Budget, a VAT rise would be the best option for their business. A National Insurance increase is the least preferred option according to those surveyed.

But according to KPMG’s quarterly survey of national business confidence, this may miss the point on the potential impact of a VAT rise on the economy.

STRIKING the work-life balance is more important to workers in Milton Keynes than a hefty bonus, according to new research.

Flexible working is the most valued benefit for employees, a survey by business advisers PricewaterhouseCoopers has found.

Almost half of more than 1,000 professionals questioned put it at the top of their list of priorities, while less than a fifth rated performance-related bonuses above other considerations.

The findings come as the new coalition government is looking to extend the right to request flexible working to all employees.

IT IS STILL early days for our new coalition government and while a number of actions have been taken - not least announcements on public sector cuts - it is probably not easy for us to grasp the new order.

The election aside and with evidence that we appear to be coming out of recession, it really must now be time to get to the business of business.

TAX PAYERS in Milton Keynes face a £2 billion increase in their bill as a result of yesterday’s Budget statement by Chancellor of the Exchequer Alistair Darling.

Senior accountants locally have warned the region to expect further tax rises as the government battles to reduce the public spending deficit.

They have branded the Budget as “blatent electioneering” and warn that the government’s plans to borrow a further £567 billion over the next five years to reduce the shortfall between public spending and tax revenue can only mean one thing: larger tax bills for everyone.

SMALL firms in Bedfordshire and Milton Keynes have voiced their disappointment that the government is to proceed with its proposed increase in National insurance Contributions.

They have welcomed the announcement that 345,000 will be taken out of the business rates system, having campaigned for such a move.

They have also welcomed the setting up of a credit adjudicator, to which small firms can appeal if banks reject their application for a loan.

Carole Hegley (pictured), chair of the FSB Luton and South Bedfordshire branch, said: "This Budget has provided welcome news on helping to improve small businesses' cashflow but the increase in the NICs will be bad for job creation.

GLOBAL risk professionals say that the 2008 banking crisis could have been averted.

A new survey shows that, almost unanimously, the sector disagrees with UK Prime Minister Gordon Brown’s assessment that the most important cause of the crisis was “global economic circumstances beyond anyone’s control”.

Instead they say that the crisis came about because of failures in organisational culture and ethics. Drastic action to improve governance within the banking sector is stiull urgently required.

ONE in seven workers failed to make it into work during the heavy snow and severe weather earlier this year, according to new figures from the Federation of Small Businesses.

Its ‘Voice of Small Business’ survey, produced in conjunction with ICM, shows that transport disruption and school closures meant parents had to stay at home.

Just over half of those small firms surveyed said they were prepared for severe weather disruption. However, on average a small business with seven members of staff saw one employee absent on at least one occasion - that is 15 per cent of staff from responding businesses unable to make it into work for at least a day because of the weather.

Neil Jennings, of business advisers Mazars, outlines nine potential approaches to reducing your organisation's VAT burden.

1 Subject to specific conditions, some businesses can issue ‘payment requests’ rather than VAT invoices, so the VAT due can be delayed until payment is received. This applies to those with contracts to supply continuous services over a long period.

Theo Chalmers celebrates the first success of the Urban Eden campaign.
URBAN Eden - the movement I started almost accidentally to promote a sustainable extension of the original masterplan for Milton Keynes - has had its first success. We appear to have forced Milton Keynes Partnership to admit that it does not know what the situation is with the trees in the city centre.
Milton Keynes Council leader Isobel McCall (pictured) gives her response to criticisms by the Urban Eden group of the expansion plans for the city
AS LEADER of Milton Keynes Council and a member of the Central Milton Keynes Board responsible for delivering the next phase of development of Central Milton Keynes, I welcome the current debate about developments in our city centre. It is disappointing, however, that the debate up to now has been based around fiction and not fact. The original plans for Central Milton Keynes may have been excellent when they were drawn up 40 years ago but life moves on and those who are leading the city forwards in 2007 are faced with an entirely different context to work in.

Urban Eden has had its first meeting, attended by a far better-than-expected cross-section of concerned citizens, including many who’ve been involved in its development and foundation. One of our tasks was to determine what our priorities would be. After discussion, it was agreed that we need to concentrate on the following to make sure that we don’t sleepwalk through the planned rape of Milton Keynes by powerful vested interests determined to suck our beautiful city dry.

Theo Chalmers reports on local reaction to his comments on the changes – not for the better, in his view – planned for Milton Keynes.
OH MY GOD, what have I done? Last month I wrote, more out of sadness than anger, how Milton Keynes, a city designed from scratch to be an urban Eden and admired world-wide was being deliberately ruined in the name of profit and misguided social engineering by central and, to some lesser extent, local government. It seems I’m not alone. From the letters, e-mails and countless conversations I’ve had, it seems that the groundswell of opinion is growing.

Pauline Stewart, who works at Ingram De Havilland in Shefford, did not know that her co-director Mike Smith had nominated her until she heard her name read out at the Bedfordshire Businesswomen networking group’s annual awards lunch. In a heartfelt nomination, he voiced his profound gratitude to Pauline for her pivotal role in ensuring that IDH was flourishing. "It is not just what she does but also the way she does it," Mr Smith said.
