Brewer Wells and Young's buys McEwan's and Younger's brands
Bedford brewery Wells and Young’s has purchased the iconic Scottish beer brands McEwan’s and Younger’s from Heineken UK.

The deal propels the 135-year-old company into the top three premium ale breweries in the UK.
It also means that Wells and Young’s will become the largest ale supplier in Scotland and will allow for expansion north of the border.
Brewing will continue at the historic Caledonian brewery in Edinburgh, with McEwan’s and Younger’s brewed at other sites across England transferred to Bedford.
Wells and Young’s managing director Nigel McNally (pictured) said: “This is a significant and major acquisition, and secures the future for the much-loved McEwan’s and Younger’s brands.
“We will invest and nurture these fantastic Scottish ale brands, and give them a new lease of life, while always putting their Scottish heritage first. That is why we will continue to brew in Scotland, establish an office in Edinburgh and invest heavily in marketing.”

Wells and Young’s brews its Bombardier, Young’s and Courage brands at its Bedford headquarters. It also completed the purchase of a 40 per cent stake in We;lls and Young’s Brewing Company from Young and Co plc earlier this year.
Mr McNally said: “Both these deals are great news for Bedford as they demonstrate our commitment to the town and the brewing industry. Bedford is already on the map as the home of great brewing so, by extending into Scotland, we are helping to raise the profile of our great beer and our home town.”
Heineken UK managing director Stefan Orlowski said: "We are delighted to have reached this agreement with Wells and Young's. We have a long-term and valued relationship with them and they have already demonstrated that they can bring their expertise and investment to brands such as Courage. We know that the McEwan's and Younger's ales will complement their portfolio perfectly.”
